Communion Tokens | ||
What else was happening during the time Ebenezer Church was being organized? |
Communion tokens are holy objects that were a kind of "ticket" to the sacrament of communion. Key members of the church were known as the elders. On the Saturday afternoon before a communion Sunday, elders were empowered to examine church members as to their worthiness to receive tokens and partake in Communion the next morning. Tokens like the ones used at the Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church are a holdover from the early Presbyterian Church in Scotland. The Ebenezer tokens were formed of lead from soapstone moulds. Communion Tokens of Pennsylvania, includes photos and history of tokens. |
